Our Mission

The mission of the Western Front Association is to educate its members and the public about the impact of the First World War on the political, social, and military history of twentieth-century Europe and America. The National World War One Museum Chapter exists as a venue for those persons who are interested in learning more (1) about the historical background and the causes of the First World War, (2) about the collections and archives housed at the National World War One Museum in Kansas City, Missouri, and (3) about the legacy of the Great War on political decision-making and social institutions as well as the fine arts and popular culture. The aims of the Association and this Chapter are to expand and deepen the understanding of the members and the general public of the 1914-1918 period and to honor the experiences and courage of those who served their countries during the Great War.

The National World War I Museum:

The Liberty Memorial Museum has been designated the National World War One Museum by the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives as part of the 2004 Defense Authorization bill. The federal designation confirms the long-held acknowledgement that the Liberty Memorial Museum is the only public museum in the United States dedicated exclusively to the history of World War One. Photos of the original dedication and opening of the Liberty Memorial are shown on the left.

Art has the capacity to interpret and create expressions that shape our perception of the great events of our time. This is especially true for the novels, films, paintings and poetry produced during and after the Great War. This symposium, presented by three distinguished scholars, will examine this premise through presentations and a discussion of three artists whose works have defined how we perceive the Great War. These artists, their works and the scholars are:
