Art has the capacity to interpret and create expressions that shape our perception of the great events of our time. This is especially true for the novels, films, paintings and poetry produced during and after the Great War. This symposium, presented by three distinguished scholars, will examine this premise through presentations and a discussion of three artists whose works have defined how we perceive the Great War. These artists, their works and the scholars are:
John Singer Sargent's Painting
Gassed

Presented By: Ian Kennedy, Curator of European Painting & Sculpture, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
Wilred Owen's War Poem
Dulce et Decorum Est

Wilfred Owen
Presented By: Michelle Boisseau, Professor of English, Poet & Author, University of Missouri-Kansas City
Eric Maria Remarque's Novel & Film
All Quiet on the Western Front

Scene from the Film
Presented By: John Tibbetts, Professor of Film Studies & Author, The University of Kansas
